EAST LANSING, Mich.—The Michigan State University Board of Trustees today re-elected Joel Ferguson of Lansing to a second two-year term as board chairperson.

Ferguson, who was first elected to the board in 1986, was first elected board chairperson in 1992 and again in 2007. As was the case two years ago, he was again elected by unanimous vote.

The board also re-elected East Lansing’s Melanie Foster to a two-year term as vice chairperson.

“I am honored that my fellow board members have unanimously re-elected me to serve as chairman of the MSU Board of Trustees,” Ferguson said. “We are at a great time in the history of our university. Despite severe economic challenges, MSU continues to thrive as one of the world’s 100 greatest universities. I am looking forward to working tirelessly with President Simon and my fellow board members to advance the interests of MSU, its faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends around the globe.”

Ferguson was initially elected in 1986 to an eight-year term on the board and was elected again in 1996 and 2004. He is the co-founder of the F&S Development Co.; founded and served as president and owner of WLAJ-TV, an ABC affiliate in Lansing; and has organized several banks, including Capitol National Bank, the only locally owned bank in Lansing. He also was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the board of Freddie Mac.

Very active in civic affairs, Ferguson is a Golden Heritage member of the NAACP, and sat on the boards of, among others, the Boy's Club, the Arthritis Foundation and Junior Achievement.

Elected to the board in 2004, Foster previously served on the MSU Board of Trustees from 1991 to 1992. In 1997 she was appointed to the Central Michigan University Board of Trustees and served until 2004. While at CMU, she chaired a national presidential search and a comprehensive presidential performance review.
