At its Oct. 24 meeting, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees adopted a resolution setting a goal of $1.5 billion for the university’s capital campaign.

Titled “Empower Extraordinary,” the fundraising effort is intended to build on MSU’s traditions, while empowering critical initiatives for the 21st century. It is MSU’s first capital campaign since 2007.

“The upcoming campaign is a historic opportunity to assure that innovation and opportunity will continue to thrive at MSU, not just for us today, but for future generations,” said MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon.

Following are other actions taken by the board at its October meeting.

The board authorized the administration to proceed with a renovation project on the Duffy Daugherty Building. The work will include renovations of the locker room and training room.

The board authorized the administration to proceed with renovations to the Berkowitz Basketball Complex. The work includes new office space and renovations in the reception area, corridors and film-viewing room for the men’s program.

The administration was authorized to plan for an addition to the Cyclotron building. The new addition would include offices, a lecture hall, conference rooms and laboratory space.

The board approved the creation of a Department of Biomedical Engineering. The new department will be located in the College of Engineering.
