EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State University Board of Trustees today approved an amendment to the university's alcohol ordinance that provides greater flexibility when granting requests for the use of alcohol for campus functions.

MSU officials said there are occasions when the use of alcohol on campus is appropriate - for example, during development and alumni gatherings, campus events and other activities. Prior to the revision, the ordinance gave limited opportunity for the secretary of the Board of Trustees to grant the use of alcohol at campus events and activities at various MSU facilities.

The amendment revises the guidelines in Ordinance 21.02, which outlines the time, place and manner for approval and authorization by the Board secretary regarding the appropriate use of alcohol. The Board approved striking the words "and within buildings or arenas where athletic events, lectures and concerts are held" from the ordinance.

With this revision, the secretary can now grant the use of alcohol at functions, such as alumni association dinners at a meeting room in an athletic or non-academic facility.
Guidelines for the use of alcohol include:

Athletic facilities - non-arenas or stadium when events are not being held

Alcohol could be allowed Monday through Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and from noon to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. However, undergraduates could not be served and only beer and wine would be allowed.

Non-academic buildings

Alcohol would be allowed Monday through Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and from noon to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. However, alcohol could only be served to adults 21 and above, and only beer and wine would be allowed.

Academic buildings, classrooms and athletic facilities, arenas or stadium (during sporting events)

Alcohol is prohibited.
