Please 08:04:51 activate the first speaker. 08:04:53 » SPEAKER: Can you hear me? 08:05:02 » I swam at M surch from 1991-1995. I was a team 08:05:08 captain and I earned by bachelor's and M.B.A. I have 08:05:12 returned to campus many times to recruit students. In 2013 08:05:16 I proudly served a four year term on the accounting and 08:05:20 information systems external advisory word. MSU is where I 08:05:25 found my life's Pat professionally and personally. 08:05:29 I owe much to the coaches and tee male athletes who fought 08:05:34 for me. Women who the fought to get pool time like the men. 08:05:39 Women like the basketball team who battled unequal treatment 08:05:42 of the men's and womens programs in the 1979 when I 08:05:50 199 lawsuit when I was just six years old. These women 08:06:06 student female athletes maintain constant vigilance. 08:06:12 From Carol hutchins to Larry Nassar the past is checkered 08:06:17 at best and criminal at worst. How confusing for so many 08:06:22 women like me who found our life paths at MSU that the 08:06:25 university continues to make the paths for young women so 08:06:29 difficult. I watched a video shared about it AD revealing 08:06:34 plans for new football facilities and dazzling hall 08:06:37 of fame. The context startling because if this 08:06:41 athletic department is trying to honor the legacy in sport, 08:06:44 they are focusing on all the wrong things. What 08:06:47 honor on choosing to spend money for football when you 08:06:49 are quieting 08:06:55 spending millions to pay off students in court. When honor 08:06:59 when you dishonor current athletes by blindsiding them 08:07:03 with cancellation for supposedly financial reasons 08:07:06 when you are planning to spend millions more on football and 08:07:10 basketball. What honor in paying lip service to the 08:07:13 diversity of school and sports programs where you padded 08:07:16 rosters to inflate participation numbers knowing 08:07:18 you'll never allow a great portion of these women to 08:07:22 compete? I can tell you where to find honor. At 6:00 a.m. 08:07:27 in that pool built in 1959 the swimmers and divers are the 08:07:30 shining example of what the best of university has to 08:07:36 offer and what title 9 could and should be. What I learned 08:07:41 about my time at MSU is it's never too late to do the right 08:07:46 thing. Help us build the path forward, a path not checkered 08:07:51 in battles but smoothed with equity. Thank you very much. 08:07:55 » Secretary: Thank you. Next 08:08:00 we'll hear from Mikey dash by followed by Kathy Fish. 08:08:03 Please activate the next speaker. 08:08:07 » Can you hear me? » Yes, you may begin. 08:08:12 » SPEAKER: My name is Mike Darby. I'm a proud graduate 08:08:16 of Michigan State University in 1993 and I'm more proud to 08:08:18 represent M 08:08:21 SU for four years on the swimming and diving program 08:08:25 from 1988 to 1992. I'll be the first to tell you, I was 08:08:30 not an all American. I was not an academic all American 08:08:33 like many of my teammates but through hard work, good 08:08:36 coaching and determination, I earned my spot and I also 08:08:39 earned my degree from Michigan State University. I was given 08:08:43 a chance as an 18-year-old from bay city Michigan to 08:08:47 represent MSU and work very hard every day to make my 08:08:52 family and my MSU family proud . For 28 years, I have 08:08:58 coached and taught high school and USA swimming first in the 08:09:02 Lansing area and now back home in bay city. During my over 08:09:04 28 years of teaching and coaching, you could ask 08:09:08 thousands of my ex-students and swimmers where I went to 08:09:11 college and they would tell you MSU. I have always spoke 08:09:15 to grey great pride about MSU and its swimming and diving 08:09:19 program. When I got the gut wrenching decision made to 08:09:23 eliminate MSU swimming and diving. I received tons of 08:09:26 calls, texts and Facebook messages from former swimmers, 08:09:29 divers, students and friends. These heartfelt, thoughtful 08:09:33 words from the community gave me hope that they could find a 08:09:37 way to keep our sport alive at MSU. This fight is still 08:09:42 alive and I hope you take a deeper look at what swimmer 08:09:46 and divers bring to Michigan State University. There are 08:09:50 over 10,000 high school swimmer and 8,000 club 08:09:53 swimmers in Michigan alone. Simple thinking tells me 08:09:57 eliminating their sport eliminates MSU from their 08:10:00 minds when choosing their college path. It's not good 08:10:03 for business or Michigan state in any shape or form. You are 08:10:06 not just eliminating this sport, you are eliminating 08:10:10 this fan base for MSU. My hope is that you revisit this 08:10:13 decision and overturn this terrible idea that this 08:10:18 decision makes MSU a better place. It doesn't. The 08:10:21 friendships and relationships I made at Michigan state are 08:10:24 second to none knowing that future swimmers and divers won 08:10:29 't have this is devastating. In closing, I want to revisit 08:10:32 what I said earlier about receiving calls and texts 08:10:34 across Michigan and across the United States. But I want to 08:10:39 tell you about one that hurt the most. My good friend 08:10:41 called to me he was sorry about the news and he had to 08:10:45 tell his daughter, an elementary school swimmer that 08:10:49 her dream of growing up and going to MSU to be a 08:10:54 veterinarian, like her mother a proud graduate of MSU 08:10:58 veterinary school and become a swimmer like Mike Darby won't 08:11:02 happen now. That's the worst part about this for me. 08:11:08 Dreams of swimmers and divers will never happen. Do the 08:11:12 right thing. Keep dreams alive for our children. 08:11:15 » Secretary: Thank you. Next 08:11:19 we'll hear from Kathy Fish followed by Adam grant. 08:11:24 Please activate the next speaker. 08:11:26 » SPEAKER: Good morning. My 08:11:30 name is Kathy Fish I'm here to ask the university to 08:11:33 reconsider eliminating the swimming and diving programs. 08:11:37 As background, I graduated in 1979 with a BS in chemical 08:11:42 engineering and was recognized in 2019 by the College of 08:11:46 engineering as a distinguished alumni. I just retired after 08:11:50 a 41 year career in research and development at Proctor and 08:11:54 gamble, the world's largest consumer products company. My 08:11:57 final seven years were chief research development and 08:12:00 innovation officer. It was an honor to lead an organization 08:12:04 of 7,000 committed to improve consumers every day lives and 08:12:07 the communities in which we work and live. I was recently 08:12:10 elected to the board of USA swimming and I'm looking 08:12:13 forward to applying my skills and experience to help grow 08:12:18 and improve the sport I love. When I reflect on the most 08:12:21 formative experiences in my life, swimming and Michigan 08:12:24 state are at the top of the list. Through swimming I 08:12:27 learned discipline, sportsmanship and very 08:12:31 important to my career, resilience. The time 08:12:34 equipment required the ability to set focus on what is most 08:12:38 important. I met professors that helped me realize 08:12:43 chemical engineer was a great focus for my love of math and 08:12:50 science and they provided an education. I took on the 08:12:53 balance of swimming and a demanding curriculum and grew 08:12:55 significantly as a result with success in both. As a 08:13:00 team, we were second in the big 10 and I also had the 08:13:04 honor of representing the university at NCAAs in 1976 08:13:09 and 1977. At Michigan state I made lifelong friends and will 08:13:13 always look back at my choice as the right one for me. When 08:13:17 I was choosing my university in 1975, it was the early days 08:13:21 of 1979. My passion for swimming made finding a 08:13:25 university with the right balance of academic and 08:13:30 athletics the priorities. I would not have considered MSU 08:13:33 without the swimming program. Students are south standing 08:13:39 students given their capacity of he will tense and work 08:13:43 ethic. I strongly believe the swimming program is an asset 08:13:46 to help a tract some of the very best. The process to 08:13:49 make this decision and decision itself has been very 08:13:52 frustrating. Communication with key stakeholder has been 08:13:55 sparse and unsatisfying. The reasons shared including 08:13:59 financial stas facilities and talent don't make sense to me 08:14:02 based on my executive experience. I strongly 08:14:05 believe finding a path forward that would work for the 08:14:08 community is possible. I ask you as leaders question if 08:14:11 this is the right choice for right reasons and you ask 08:14:13 university leadership to pause and work with the battle for 08:14:18 Spartan swimming on a plan to deliver what would need to be 08:14:21 true to save the sport as an asset for Michigan state. 08:14:24 Thank you very much. 08:14:31 Secretary: Next we'll hear from Adam grant followed my 08:14:38 salmon Octalet. » SPEAKER: I'm here because 08:14:41 your diving coach Eric best has been the most important 08:14:45 mentor in my life. I owe more to Spartan swimming and diving 08:14:48 than any other program or institution and it's saying a 08:14:53 lot as a lifetime Wolverine. I could go on about the ways 08:14:57 swimming and diving attracts student excellence, all the 08:15:01 ways to make the economics work. I'm not here to 08:15:05 convince you of anything. I spent enough time with leaders 08:15:08 to know they can't be forced to change their minds. 08:15:11 They need to find their own reasons for change. As an 08:15:15 organizational psychologist at Wharton, I spend a lot of time 08:15:17 working with organizations on decisions. One of most common 08:15:20 traps 1 escalation of compliment to a losing course 08:15:25 of action. We make an initial decision and get negative 08:15:28 feedback but instead of rethinking it we double down. 08:15:33 I'm sure you've seen it happen buying a new engine for the 08:15:37 car because he vested in the brakes. Staying in a bad 08:15:39 relation shim even after your friends encourage you to lever 08:15:45 . There's a Seinfeld episode about waiting forever at a 08:15:48 Chinese restaurant because they waited a long time 08:15:51 investing in the table. Blockbuster went underbecause 08:15:55 they escalated the commitment of buying physical videos 08:15:59 instead of buying Netflix. Borders went bankrupt when 08:16:03 Amazon went digital. And Michigan football continues to 08:16:08 suck because they won't let go of Jim Harbaugh. Some costs 08:16:11 are part of story but it's more about ego and image. We 08:16:14 want to convince our ststles and everyone else we made a 08:16:17 good decision. We don't want to admit we hired the wrong 08:16:20 coach or wasted several years with him. With the benefit of 08:16:25 hindsight we look back and wish we changed course. Not 08:16:31 long ago I had a chance to ask Jeff bees yoas how he avoids 08:16:34 escalation of commitment. He identifies a list of 08:16:37 conditions that would lead him to reverse his decision when 08:16:41 he makes a high stakes choice. I ask you what would those 08:16:45 considers look like for you? What would motivate you to 08:16:48 reconsider the decision to cut swimming and diving and how 08:16:50 would you go about giving that possibility a fair chance? 08:16:54 One thing we know it's hard for the who made the original 08:16:59 decision to escape escalation because they have a stake to 08:17:06 defending the choice. Two those in escalation commitment 08:17:09 would tell you that the best way to avoid sit to bring in 08:17:11 an independent group to seas the decision. Would you be 08:17:14 willing to appoint that committee, to bring in alums, 08:17:18 administrators, faculty and students to give that a fair 08:17:23 shot? I hope you will. Thank you have. 08:17:32 » Secretary: Thank you. Next we'll hear from Salmon 08:17:36 followed by Chrissy 08:17:41 Ball. Please activate the next speaker. 08:17:47 » You may begin. » SPEAKER: 08:17:55 Hello, can you hear me? 08:18:00 » SPEAKER: Could you put my video there. I spent a lot of 08:18:05 time making a background to explain how the corruption in 08:18:09 the university works 08:18:11 . » Secretary: We don't have 08:18:15 video for speakers but you have to submit that to the 08:18:16 office. » SPEAKER: This is ridiculous. 08:18:19 I spent all night making a chart so people will 08:18:24 understand. I'm a professor. I've been a professor here 08:18:30 almost 40 years. And you fired me last year. Shame on 08:18:35 you fighting on after my service almost 40 years. 08:18:42 Spartans service. I didn't have a single student complain 08:18:46 about me. I have a spotless record of teaching and 08:18:53 research. And now you get on the television with your -- 08:19:00 with Dianne Byrum and making negative that a tacked people 08:19:02 on 08:19:08 -- that I attacked people with emails. If you make this 08:19:11 claim you must show a single email that I attack anybody. 08:19:15 There are two reporters appealed, by appealing freedom 08:19:18 of information act. They collected all my emails and 08:19:23 they send me. It's all redacted. I spent a lot of 08:19:28 time. I present it to you and you must explain to me where I 08:19:34 exactly offended people. You can't -- you can't fire people 08:19:42 like this by -- you know creative narratives. The 08:19:47 reason I'm fired is because I criticize discrimination, 08:19:52 racism and Islamo phobia in my department. It's a 08:19:55 known fact. If you look at the chart. I made a chart 08:20:00 behind me, I was slandered 08:20:08 by these people in my department and as a big 08:20:13 nepotism in the university. They all know each other. I 08:20:19 was -- racist person started this process. They sent it to 08:20:23 friends in the dean's office. They told me don't talk to 08:20:26 dean because they work with us . Dean refused to talk to me 08:20:32 . He sent me to provost office. Provost is busy 08:20:38 dealing with the convicted sex offender. He sends me 08:20:44 to the [indiscernible] office. The person known to be 08:20:47 responsible for sexual harassment himself, three 08:20:53 times, then he refuses to make any grievance for me. He 08:21:02 sends back to provost office. Provost sends to dean office. 08:21:06 Dean's office is back to -- I' m back to the same person 08:21:12 harassing me, racist people harassing me that. Is say 08:21:15 committee of his friends to make an issue called 08:21:17 university 08:21:24 -- administrative review. You can't tell me administrative 08:21:29 review. The person slander makes his own committee. This 08:21:32 is never seen any place in the world. I spent five years of 08:21:39 my life going in a circle. Not hitting a single 08:21:47 grievance hearing and you end up with the same person, 08:21:51 racist people in my department . It's proven cases cited by 08:21:54 racism in the department and the person who investigated 08:22:00 this is fired by university. Then sent to the enabler, dean 08:22:05 , who refuses to talk to me. Can you imagine any place in 08:22:08 the world, the dean who is supposed to overlook the 08:22:14 department, refuses to talk to faculty who is being 08:22:18 considered for dismissal. 08:22:26 » Secretary: You've exceed you're times. We have to 08:22:31 conclude your remarks now. Thank you for your comments. 08:22:37 Next we will hear from Chrissy Ball followed by Amanda 08:22:41 Thomasal. Please activate the next speaker. 08:22:43 » SPEAKER: Can you hear me? 08:22:47 » Secretary: Yes. You may begin. 08:22:53 » SPEAKER: Thank you. My name is Chrissy weathersby Ball I 08:23:01 was a scholarship athlete from 19896-2000. I was on the 08:23:07 women's gymnastics where the abuse I suffered from required 08:23:13 me to retire. I was abused by not one, but two employees on 08:23:17 the staff. I'm addressing you for clarity regarding the 08:23:22 healing fund. Larry Nassar was my doctor at MSU. He 08:23:26 conducted our injuries, determined my medical 08:23:31 decisions all while sexually abusing me. I began mental 08:23:34 health treatments my freshman year as a result of abuse. I 08:23:38 was confused and vulnerable making me a perfect targ tote 08:23:44 be groomed and sexually abused by my professor and strength 08:23:50 coach Tim wakum. The abuse I endured at Michigan State 08:23:59 placed me literally in the pit of hell. My most recent 08:24:02 request for treatment reimbursement was denied in 08:24:05 one sentence by email less than 24 hours after submitting 08:24:09 . There was no greeting nor a signature. I have 08:24:13 professional medical documentation that this 08:24:16 required treatment stems from the abuse I suffered from my 08:24:21 doctor at MSU, Larry Nassar. So my questions to you include 08:24:26 the following: One, is there a more human form of 08:24:32 communication for survivors to seek reimbursement for health 08:24:37 conditions caused by abuse suffered by Larry Nassar 08:24:39 sitting before you today, publicly displaying some of 08:24:44 the most gruesome and painful details of my life? Do we not 08:24:50 deserve more on that automated response? Two, can they be 08:24:54 treated with a fraction of the dignity you and your staff 08:25:00 offer to sexual abusers. I have muns of pages of 08:25:02 documentation proving employees at Michigan State 08:25:07 worked several months to get Mr. Wakum retirement before 08:25:10 benefits in 2019 and I get less than 24 hours for my 08:25:15 request to be considered before being smacked in the 08:25:18 face with denial. Three, who is this healing fund for in? 08:25:23 Really for survivors to heal or a PR stunt, guys. Dr. 08:25:28 Stanley, you mentioned in your January 15 community letter 08:25:33 dismantling systemic barriers takes commitment and time. 08:25:36 End quote. As a black teenager nearly destroyed by 08:25:40 the abuse of two white men on your campus, how long do you 08:25:46 foresee treating me like a human will take. Thank you. 08:25:50 » Secretary: Next we'll hear 08:25:57 from Amanda Thomasal followed by David Maruzzi. Please 08:26:00 activate the next speaker. 08:26:04 » SPEAKER: Hi, all. Good morning, Kelly, wonderful to 08:26:09 see you and happy 2021678 let me start by saying I want to 08:26:13 be here to address you as little as you want me, yet, 08:26:16 here I am again to beg you to treat the students on this 08:26:22 campus and athletes that wear your green and white like 08:26:28 literal human beings instead of valuing them by how many 08:26:31 dollars they can bring to the university. I'm hear to talk 08:26:36 about the healing fund you promised my sister survivors 08:26:40 but I can't speak to call you to reconsider cutting any 08:26:45 athletic program or program for students in general 08:26:49 especially where you have wax figures at the president with 08:26:54 Lynn center. It reminds me of a time when you cut s class 08:26:58 and got rid of our dark room for photography the same year 08:27:02 you broke ground on a $10 million art museum. Students 08:27:08 are supposed to be more than just a place to make money. 08:27:12 This is supposed to be a place of education and growth but 08:27:14 you make they'll possible. Let's look back to the healing 08:27:16 pain continuing to cause pain for the community it was 08:27:20 created to help. I'm going to be honest, I'm just like 08:27:27 really over people calling me and asking me how to get help 08:27:34 from MSU. I help a number of survivors and I also have a 08:27:36 bunch of friends 08:27:44 friends, the woman that spoke before me, Chrissy, she's an 08:27:46 amazing woman. She taught me so much knowing her. I 08:27:50 watched her struggle trying to access -- just access basic 08:27:55 healing through the fund that was put together for her. And 08:28:04 for people like her and yet it 's doctor every time she comes 08:28:09 for more help, she ends up hurt more. Every time people 08:28:14 come to you for help come to be hurting. I'm sick of it. 08:28:17 I'm sick of the way you treat your students and people who 08:28:20 have been on your campus like they don't matter, like all 08:28:26 that matters is how much money they can bring on the campus 08:28:31 like their healing and growth. Treat them like people. If 08:28:34 you make a healing fund is it really for heal organize like 08:28:39 Chrissy said or just to make it look better for PR. Hey, 08:28:41 we're helping people heal with this fund that we're not 08:28:46 letting them access. I just, y'all, can you please do 08:28:51 better? I'm sick of coming here. I'm trying to just hike 08:28:55 in the mountains right now and cutting my trip short to ask 08:29:01 you to treat your students and survivors and the people on 08:29:08 your campus like humans, not just dollar signs. Thank you. 08:29:10 » Secretary: Thank you. Next 08:29:16 we'll hear from David Maruzzi. Please activate the next 08:29:20 speaker. » SPEAKER: Hi, I'm David 08:29:24 moruzzi a media and information student. 08:29:31 Trueition alone is $7230 to $8095 per semester that. Is $ 08:29:36 14,000 to $17,000 for an academic year. Michigan's 08:29:44 minimum wage is.9.65 an hour. At minimum wage I have to work 08:29:53 1498 to hours to afford tuition alone well. 08:29:56 These taxes, I don't know how many hours I have to work. I 08:29:59 don't want to think about it. But I want to be a Spartan. I 08:30:04 want to be in this community. But I'm struggling and I'm 08:30:06 confident countless other students are struggling during 08:30:12 this pandemic as well. MSU could you please announce a 08:30:17 tuition freeze for the 2021, 2022 academic year. I want to 08:30:21 be a Spartan, I'm just scared I won't be able to afford it 08:30:26 if tuition increases again. Especially during a panem dick 08:30:29 . Please treat me like a human, not a dollar sign and 08:30:34 please implement a tuition freeze. Thank you very much. 08:30:37 » Secretary: Thank you. That 08:30:41 concludes public participation . 08:30:43 » PRESIDENT: First of all let 08:30:47 me acknowledge the speakers and thank them so much for 08:30:50 their participation in the meeting. For many of you, I 08:30:53 know it takes courage to come forward and you are committed 08:30:58 to your caves so thank you. I want to begin by noting that 08:31:03 this day, February 12 in Michigan history is the day in 08:31:12 1855, 156 years ago the Michigan Goff signed the bill 08:31:15 for the agriculture College of Michigan. We graduated our 08:31:23 first class in 1861 and that year underwent the first of 08:31:26 five name changes. Michigan State has come a long way 08:31:29 since it was established. I said when I came I was excited 08:31:33 about the upward trajectory and we can do more and I'm 08:31:36 continued to working with all of you as we continue the 08:31:40 momentum as we grow our impact in education and outreach as 08:31:43 well. We have a long way to go as well. Ways to speak to 08:31:46 who we are and how we model our values in an institution 08:31:49 and community. We have work to do to fulfill our 08:31:53 commitments and ensure everyone here fulfill their 08:31:56 success in a space that is respectful, welcoming and 08:32:00 supportive. That starts with honest assessments of 08:32:03 university and history. It includes acknowledging the 08:32:08 university's presence on and S . tral lands of indigenous 08:32:11 people who were here long before our founding. We have 08:32:17 a continued obligation to work with all underrepresented 08:32:20 communities. Our presentation is from Ruth 08:32:24 Nicole Brown who chairs the department of African studies. 08:32:25 This is appropriate as February is black history 08:32:29 month in the United States. We celebrate the contributions 08:32:33 of black Spartan and those helping MSU more fully live 08:32:38 its values of different EI. I hope you attend the program 08:32:41 virtual this year and available on February 24678 I 08:32:43 also want to note that our office of research and 08:32:46 innovation is honoring women in research month with film 08:32:50 screenings and a panel discussion featuring women in 08:32:54 research at MSU including the provost Dr. Teresa Woodruff. 08:32:57 Despite the challenges associated with working during 08:32:59 the pandemic there's significant progress in the 08:33:04 university different EI and strategic planning processes 08:33:07 and all are moving forward in an inclusive and transparent 08:33:10 way. We can look forward to hearing more in the coming 08:33:14 weeks and months. The Taskforce on racial equity 08:33:19 submitted for near term actions on faculty staff, 08:33:22 diversity and policing. Recommendations, my responses 08:33:25 and webcast conversations are available for view online. I' 08:33:28 m pleased to talk about an straird contribution announced 08:33:33 last week. He's add graduate of College of business and 08:33:53 member of MSU basketball team it be named in honor of Tom 08:33:58 Izzo. He honors coach Izzo with the naming of basketball 08:34:04 court and unnaming of the one of centers for math's parent. 08:34:08 They support the Spartan for life fund sphoakouses on 08:34:14 opportunities for all studen athletes. I want to thank 08:34:19 Matt coach, congratulate coach Izzo and others for hard work 08:34:22 in achieving this goal. A very, very special thanks to 08:34:29 Trustee emeritus Brian Mazone for Shepherding this gift to 08:34:33 Michigan State University. We signed a 30 year agreement 08:34:38 with Henry Ford health system fostering best in class cancer 08:34:41 care and designed to address needs of underserved 08:34:45 communities both urban and rural. We want to address health 08:34:56 disparities offering healing and hope in southeast Michigan 08:34:58 and beyond. This is in addition rather to our 08:35:01 existing relationships with other hospital systems around 08:35:06 the state. We also announce a new partnership with apple for 08:35:11 a developing academy in Detroit. This supports the 08:35:14 community and open to all Michigan residents through a 08:35:18 competitive application process. As we continue to anticipate the 08:36:53 facility for rar ice isotope beams they are 08:36:57 working to maximize benefits to society. A new $ 08:37:05 13 million department of energy grant will help us. 08:37:09 These bonus isotopes benefit a variety of other fields 08:37:13 including medicine, material science and studies. Such 08:37:18 isotopes in demand for diagnostic pet scans and could 08:37:21 help with novel cancer treatments. In the field of 08:37:27 art, College of arts faculty members awarded a $3 million 08:37:32 grant to explore how people applied creativity to -- 08:37:36 scholarships create a community space to share 08:37:40 collective stories illuminating how art can 08:37:43 promote healing and justice. Works they gather are online 08:37:48 and physical exhibits in Lansing and elsewhere. They 08:37:52 are essential to quality of life especially in the 08:37:57 isolating times we're going to . I want to remind everyone 08:38:05 Brodar museum is open and I enjoyed the 08:38:09 exhibits. We continue to monitor COVID-19 on the campus 08:38:11 and support the state's vaccination program. Our part 08:38:14 iser inship with the county health department for high 08:38:19 capacity inoculation center at our pavilion is winning notice 08:38:22 nationally and locally and we' re pleased to say the governor 08:38:26 toured earlier this week. I' ll have an upcoming webcast 08:38:28 for employees discussing vaccines and we'll talk about 08:38:32 what I view as a necessity for vaccination going forward. 08:38:37 In closing I want to note in 1873MSU enrolled the first 08:38:41 international student. In 1956 the first dean of 08:38:44 international programs of appointed here and we enrolled 08:38:49 4500 students from 140 countries. Many of them 08:38:56 together with Asian identifying students staff and 08:39:29 faculty sell lated the lunar new year which happens to begin on February 12 as well. With that full circle I'll conclude my remarks. Thank you. We'll go to the gift and 08:39:29 contract report. Do we have a motion. 08:39:55 » So moved. » All knows favor say aye. 08:39:56 » Trustee: Aye. 08:40:01 » a opposed in any abstentions . The gift and contract 08:40:05 report is approved. We move to the research present. 08:40:11 Again, interim Vice President for research Doug Gage. 08:40:14 » Dr. Gage: Thank you this 08:40:18 research report is a highlight of every meeting 08:40:21 this falls in women and research at MSU and I'm Plied 08:40:26 to have Dr. Brown present her research today. Dr. Ruth 08:40:30 Nicole Brown is the inaugural MSU foundation professor in 08:40:35 the department of African- American and African studies 08:40:40 at Michigan State University. She was an associate professor 08:40:45 before coming here. Dr. Ruth Nicole Brown is at her best 08:40:48 when disciplinary norms are disrupted in favor of creating 08:40:52 ideas that swing. Dr. Brown's research documents Ann Curry 08:40:57 liesing black girls lived experiences and practical ways 08:41:02 they make black girlhood with those who love them. Her 08:41:06 previous work is how black girls conceptualize freedom, 08:41:11 creative and relationships in saving our lives or soul hot. 08:41:15 This received support from the knowo foundation and whiting 08:41:19 foundation. Shell discuss this research and outreach 08:41:24 program here. She has authored two books here our 08:41:29 truths and black girlhood celebration toward a hip-hop 08:41:38 feminist pedagogy and co- edited several and thol guys. 08:41:43 Please welcome Dr. Ruth Nicole Brown. 08:41:46 » Dr. Brown: 08:42:11 » I'm now unmuted. Thank you. 08:42:13 Can you hear me. Thank you for the opportunity to share 08:42:17 my research with you. My name is Dr. Ruth Nicole Brown and 08:42:21 it's with great pleasure end profound sense of 08:42:24 responsibility that I serve as the inaugural chairperson of 08:42:30 African-American and African studies at MSU. I begin my 08:42:33 presentation with an introduction to the visionary 08:42:38 work building the new department of AAAS and I'll 08:42:42 share my research about black girls and one larger aspect 08:42:48 called black girl genius week. I close with the invitation to 08:42:52 dream with us anew. Many colleges and universities do 08:42:56 not sufficiently invest in the infrastructure, intellectual 08:43:02 and academic projects and cultural works of black 08:43:05 studies department which make it impossible for the 08:43:09 university to make good on the promise for all students, 08:43:12 faculty staff and community members. The new department 08:43:16 of AAAS insists that black studies uncovers and creates 08:43:19 technologies of living for black people and black futures 08:43:23 . When we say black people, we mean all black 08:43:28 people and when we say black futures that is to say beyond 08:43:31 survivorral and into wellness. I'm honored to work and build 08:43:46 alongside Dr. Lomax and others . Our position positions us 08:43:49 on the van guard of black studies. We've been busy in 08:43:55 our one and a half semesters together getting to know each 08:43:59 other and overhauling critic well. Support from 08:44:03 faculty staff and admin across camp just our curriculum 08:44:06 proposal that includes a revised undergraduate minor, 08:44:11 revised master and doctoral program and entirely brand new 08:44:16 and much anticipated bachelor' s agreement. The outcome of 08:44:18 mission will ensure that our students are connected to 08:44:23 black communities, produce ideas that affirm black life 08:44:28 and engage create active toward the future ecologies we 08:44:32 all need pushing past what seems like the end of this 08:44:36 world catapulting us to a place where blackness is 08:44:41 already an expanse, alive, loved, every day Cherished, 08:44:44 familiar and still very much beyond. As inaugural chair, I 08:44:47 'm building an infrastructure from which our collective 08:44:52 visions for AAAS thrive and where we're able to reach for 08:44:55 new relations and creative expressions of power. I aim 08:44:59 to implement structures that support and hold in high 08:45:04 regard black feminist practice and integrated models of 08:45:09 research, teaching, service and engagement exceeding 08:45:13 current legibility as outreach or public engagement because 08:45:17 it's precisely more complex, rigorous and meaningful. In 08:45:23 2006, I founded saving our lives, hear our truths or what 08:45:29 we affectionately refer to as SOLHOT to change the devaluing 08:45:32 negative narrative of black girlhood through research and 08:45:34 engagementment from the beginning of my career, the 08:45:37 questions I pursue, the courses I teach, the art I 08:45:40 make, follow the questions, answers and organizing 08:45:46 dilemmas we have in SOLHOT to make good on a promise of 08:45:50 black girlhood celebration I created a paradigm shift where 08:45:53 black girls are seeing differently than injustice 08:45:56 dictates through research. Black girls are not the 08:46:06 problem. Institutional erase your the polemic. My first 08:46:11 book was a labor of love written during SOLHOT's first 08:46:16 year. I insifted on work through pedestrian going call 08:46:22 experimentations and looked at it as a organizing social 08:46:26 construct. In favor of creating an Intyrely new field 08:46:29 , black girlhood studies that centers direct work with black 08:46:34 girls. Black girlhood studies is one of three pillared in 08:46:38 the AAAS graduate education alongside black cultures and 08:46:44 institutions and black speculative ecologies. Over 08:46:49 15 years SOLHOT has offered a structure to do as the work 08:46:54 claims save lives and facilitate truths. The things 08:46:57 required are analyzed in the second book hear our truths 08:47:01 the creative potential of black girlhood. Poet rirk 08:47:05 social gatherings, the arts and humanities affirm our most 08:47:09 Cherished truths and belief about ourselves. The College 08:47:12 of arts and letters, cultd tour of care shows me that 08:47:16 dean long appreciates what we' re after and new metrics 08:47:19 remain called to get at the best of what we do. While I 08:47:24 created SOLHOT there continues to be thinkers and doers who 08:47:29 make the celebration possible as evidenced in both 08:47:37 and thol guys. I grew this through black girl genius week 08:47:43 . It's a week long campaign of calling black girls 08:47:50 collectively forth as solutionaries. As indicated 08:47:55 on these various fliers the schedule for black girl 08:47:58 deanous week are place daised department ranging from 08:48:02 meetups at the mall, gathering it's public, shared meals and 08:48:07 events at public library. The work with the girls provide 08:48:12 the backbone of black girl genius weeks. After working 08:48:14 with black girls, 50 institutional partner and 08:48:17 training, hundreds of home girls I know this work 08:48:20 requires a certain level organization that is mostly 08:48:23 hard work and deep collaboration so there's rest 08:48:26 in the calling and the doing. Board of trustees, if you were 08:48:30 to participate in black girl genius week, one of the things 08:48:33 you would receive before the work begins is a letter to 08:48:36 welcome and remind you that one, building community with 08:48:40 black girls is an honor and privilege. No, there's no one 08:48:44 way to be a black girl. Trust that everything they say is 08:48:47 truth and freedom strategy. Two extend yourself in 08:48:51 dedication of a black girl you want known and remembered. We 08:48:57 do not model roles in SOLHOT. We show up present with 08:49:03 Bring thing you might anticipate 08:49:08 you need, water, snacks, a plan that values all of who we 08:49:10 are in a language black students can trust. Bring 08:49:13 materials that inspire our collective health and 08:49:19 creativity and lastly, have each other's black like your 08:49:22 life depends on its but it surely does. Look each other 08:49:27 in the eye, meet that black girl face to face doond all 08:49:31 that it demands to your project can sore. This 08:49:35 focuses on the way that organizes us to various 08:49:41 witnesses that render poetic kinship to black girls have 08:49:44 multiple places to be, dream and play. Black girls you 08:49:48 know and love and live with do not have to pretend like they 08:49:51 don't know that success can absolutely mean pointing back 08:49:56 to those who grew up, to implement scale beyond numbers 08:50:01 and survey data that collectively can make for a 08:50:06 social whereas the poet Gwendolyn brooks reminds us 08:50:09 the living do not feel superior to the dead. 08:50:12 In close, how can we communicate to people in the 08:50:16 future, some 17 billion years from now that we make the most 08:50:19 out of what remains of this current snoament namely, the 08:50:24 opportunity tour major change that does not time go back to 08:50:29 the way things were but rather towards the future that make 08:50:33 the education irresistible to those requiring greater 08:50:37 justice. There's students, staff, students 08:50:41 showing up with curiosity shaped by loss, heartbreak and 08:50:47 wonderment that deserve support. We need more of us 08:50:51 with black student studdies training who know how to trust 08:50:56 the process, uncertainty, the unseen and be readyicly 08:50:59 present well. Continued support the new department of 08:51:03 AAAS will continue to grow because of our comprehensive 08:51:08 attention to and distinctive training in black feminism, 08:51:13 gender and sexuality study. Our fate as AAAS is tied to 08:51:18 the mutual well-being of other ethnic studies on campus. 08:51:22 Black people of color, queer, and underrepresented students, 08:51:27 faculty staff and community members coupled with the 08:51:30 diversity, equity, inclusion and access yiblghtd 08:51:35 initiatives. I'm certain the vision nary work that is AAAS 08:51:40 will enable MSU to bring more of us into a future present of 08:51:44 our own desires. Thank you. 08:51:57 » Thank you very much. I 08:52:00 think you have established a remarkable path forward for 08:52:02 the department and what it's going to accomplish. As you 08:52:07 mentioned, it's intersection on the work with DEI anded 08:52:10 need to punctate or guide the work we're doing with 08:52:15 solarship from faculty and staff I think is key to us 08:52:18 moving forward and you are doing it in multiple 08:52:20 intersectional parts for the university. You are going 08:52:25 beyond just issues related to being black and being a woman 08:52:28 but at the intersection of feminism, et cetera. I think 08:52:32 it's extraordinarily important and I really appreciate the 08:52:34 fact that you are here and applaud the board in its 08:52:38 wisdom before I came or maybe right at the time I came in 08:52:42 establishing this. We're very , very excited about this. 08:52:45 Thank you. » Thank you president Stanley 08:52:47 and the board of trustees. 08:52:50 » PRESIDENT: Any comments or questions? 08:52:55 » Trustee: I would echo how much I appreciate Dr. Brown 08:52:59 coming to Michigan State University. As you can tell from our committee reports, that many 09:03:15 of the topics that you addressed us this morning, we 09:03:19 are actively considering and doing planning and 09:03:24 deliberation on. To those from the swimmers and divers 09:03:28 program, I do understand 09:03:34 your concern with the board this is a family discussion in 09:03:38 my own household. I have two young grandsons swimmers in a 09:03:46 local club program. I want to welcome Linda Green our 09:03:50 inaugural dean for the MSU College of law. I believe she 09:03:53 's at least viewing us remotely this morning. I want 09:03:58 to say good morning, Linda, I' m very excited to 09:04:00 have you joining the community. I would like to 09:04:04 welcome Marlon lynch the new Vice President of public 09:04:07 safety and chief of police. I 'm looking forward to working 09:04:11 with both of you in the weeks and months to come. On behalf 09:04:14 of board of trustees, I want to say a great big thank you 09:04:17 to Matt 09:04:25 Ishpia for his $32 meteorologist to athletics. A 09:04:28 gift not only to honor coach Izzo but a gift that will have 09:04:33 benefit to all Spartan athletes through Spartans for 09:04:36 life generosity. Hopefully there's an opportunity in the 09:04:42 near future to thank him in person. Following the board 09:04:45 organizational meeting on January 13, board committees 09:04:47 have been established and can be found on the board's web 09:04:51 site. And yesterday, Trustees met virtually with our student 09:04:56 and faculty liaisons and we look forward to the work we 09:05:00 will collectively do together especially the ongoing work to 09:05:04 make MSU a safe and welcoming campus community. This 09:05:07 concludes my report. 09:05:18 » Next we'll hear from vice 09:05:21 chair Kelly 09:05:28 . » Vice Chair Kelly: Thank you 09:05:32 . I want to acknowledge that gift and it will be a great 09:05:34 benefit to the athletic department. Secondly, I would 09:05:38 like to welcome. I know it's the second meeting for the new 09:05:41 Trustees but yesterday was our first workshop. I think the 09:05:44 board is working good together and I really appreciate their 09:05:52 input. That would be Truste O'Keefe and Trustee Dr. Vassar 09:05:55 . Good things to come in the future and I look forward it 09:05:58 to. Thank you. » Thank you. Next we'll hear 09:06:04 from Trustee Foster. » Trustee: Thank you. I would 09:06:09 like to thank Matt for his very generous gift to Michigan 09:06:14 State University. I'm thrilled at what it's going to 09:06:20 accomplish with the funds. I want to recognize Jeff for his 09:06:26 diligent work in bringing the Apple development academy to 09:06:29 Detroit. It was a long process and there is the first 09:06:32 one in North America. It's so exciting that it's going to be 09:06:35 in the heart of Detroit. I would also like to recognize 09:06:40 all of those who who so diligently for the Henry Ford 09:06:46 health system agreement and especially Norm Beauchamp 09:06:48 because this is transformational for this 09:06:53 university. I have confidence that our leadership pulled 09:06:55 this together and it's really going to be something that is 09:06:58 going to make a difference in so many lives. That concludes 09:07:06 my remarks. » Thank you. Trustee Knake 09:07:10 -jefferson 09:07:12 . » Trustee: Thank you. I'll 09:07:16 join the chorus in echoing what chairwoman Byrum said 09:07:22 thanking Matt for the extraordinary gift to MSU 09:07:26 leatics. I want to -- athletics. I want to 09:07:29 give my thanks to Dr. Brown for her presentation this 09:07:33 morning. Truly inspiring and amazing work. I, too, stand 09:07:36 ready to help support you in any way I can. I want to also 09:07:42 welcome Linda Green as the new dean for the College of law. 09:07:49 As provost Woodruff said she has an extraordinary 09:07:51 representation. I can tell you the law college has a 09:07:55 special place in my heart since that's where I began as 09:08:01 an academic. Even though it's no longer my academic home, as 09:08:05 a law professor, I was hearing from others across the country 09:08:09 , huge congratulations. It's incredible for Michigan State 09:08:12 to bring her to the campus. Welcome and I look forward to 09:08:17 seeing how you lead the College of law forward along 09:08:24 Dr. Pro-- Provost Woodruff. I want to welcome our chief of 09:08:28 police and Vice President for public safety Marlon lynch. 09:08:30 Everyone might not know that the board of trustees was 09:08:32 actively involved in the interviewing process. We 09:08:37 heard from him directly, and I think he's going to be a 09:08:40 wonderful assets to our community. Welcome back to 09:08:44 Marlon Lynch as well. And then finally I'll just thank 09:08:49 all of the speakers who showed up today and in particular the 09:08:53 swimmers because I hear everything that you are saying 09:08:56 both when you show up for public comment and also I'm 09:09:02 reading all. of your emails. Please know we're 09:09:05 hearing your voices and for all of the speakers that 09:09:07 showed up for public comment today, we're listening and we 09:09:11 hear you and thank you for taking time out of your 09:09:17 schedule to bring these things to our attention 09:09:22 . » Thank you. Trustee O'Keefe? 09:09:23 » Trustee: Thank you. I would 09:09:26 like to applaud and recognize president Stanley and the 09:09:29 administration for the transformational announcements 09:09:34 with Apple and Henry Ford hospital. I know a lot of 09:09:38 work was put into that and also welcome Marlon Lynch and 09:09:42 Linda Green to our Spartan 09:09:55 family. I want to thank Matt Ishpia for his contribution to 09:09:59 Michigan State. It was a selfless commitment by Matt to 09:10:02 Michigan State and I want to thank him for making that. I 09:10:04 want to comment on the swimmers and divers. It 09:10:08 's hard not to like this group . They are thoughtful, 09:10:11 articulate, great ambassadors of the university. I'm sure 09:10:16 at times that our AD must look like Lucy pulling the football 09:10:19 away from Charlie Brown from them. There's an 09:10:22 informational and expectation gap between the parties. 09:10:26 As an expert in dispute resolution when this happens 09:10:30 the divide becomes greater because the 09:10:36 affected parties are no longer engaged. It's difficult to 09:10:43 see who in the words of Adam grant has escalated. As an 09:10:46 alum and board member it's disappointing on a number of 09:10:50 levels because it's a break in the harmony of the Spartan 09:10:53 family and I believe we're better than that so I help to 09:10:56 comes to a responsible and acceptable conclusion to all 09:11:02 parties to at least either understand where the 09:11:04 university is or a resolution that is acceptable. Thank you 09:11:06 . 09:11:10 » Thank you. Trustee Scott? 09:11:11 » Trustee: Thank you. I would 09:11:16 like to also welcome Dr. Linda Green. I also once again 09:11:21 would like to welcome Dr. Ruth Brown and also Marlon Lynch to 09:11:25 MSU. We got three great people in a row. I'm super 09:11:28 excited about all of them and what they individually bring 09:11:32 to the university and I'm looking forward to working 09:11:36 with them. I would say to the swim and dive people that have 09:11:44 spoken, I really can't think of a more passionate group 09:11:48 that convicts my spirit every single time I hear them talk 09:11:51 about the importance of program to them. I want you 09:11:54 all to know that 09:12:05 I take seriously what you've said and I empathize with the 09:12:08 position you've been placed in . I listen to the emails, 09:12:11 letters and some of you have called me. It's not falling 09:12:16 on deaf ears and I want you to know we do care. I want to 09:12:21 thank Matt for the renowned and just extremely generous 09:12:26 donation that he made to MSU. 09:12:41 Thank you for your selflessness and that donation 09:12:45 . I wanted to thank Jeff and those working with Apple with 09:12:48 the collaboration. When I article came out I posted on 09:12:51 all of my social media. It's something I really feel 09:12:56 great about bragging about what we're doing in Detroit. 09:13:00 That's the same with Henry Ford. These are initiates 09:13:05 that are going to be groundbreaking and make 09:13:08 huge differences and hopefully be inspiring to many in the 09:13:11 Detroit area. I'm excited for those things. I thank all of 09:13:15 you who worked so hard and tireless to make these things 09:13:19 come to fruition. That concludes my remarks. Thank 09:13:21 you. 09:13:27 » Trustee Tebay 09:13:29 ? » Trustee: I echo my 09:13:35 colleagues in thanking Robin, Mike, Adam and others speaking 09:13:38 about the swim and dive team and echoing Trustee O'Keefe. 09:13:43 I share his frustration. Adam , I don't know if you are a 09:13:47 motivational speaker but you should be. I was taking notes 09:13:50 while you were speaking and will remember the escalating 09:13:54 of commitment to a losing course. I hear you. I 09:13:59 definitely appreciate the tenacity of all of you 09:14:02 supporting our swimming and diving team. As my other 09:14:05 colleagues have said we hear you. It's not falling 09:14:12 on deaf ears and I hope we can come to type of resolution. I 09:14:19 want to thank Chrissy and Amanda for speaking today. I 09:14:22 know it's not easy to share these types of frustrations 09:14:25 and thank you for your courage and coming to talk to us. I 09:14:29 want to acknowledge David about the struggles with 09:14:33 tuition and minimum wage and continuing to understand the 09:14:36 struggles of many of our students. So, David, thank 09:14:39 you, again for coming to talk to us about that. And that's 09:14:43 all I have to say thank you. 09:14:48 » Thank you. Trustee Vassar. 09:14:50 » Trustee: I always get to be 09:14:54 last but certainly not least. I just want to echo everyone's 09:14:58 comments regarding the generous 09:15:02 gift from alum 09:15:12 Ishbia's donation. 32 is a special number for me and 09:15:16 Michigan State as well. I'm glad for that gift and looking 09:15:18 forward to the work and development that will help 09:15:23 from imi'm also excited about the Henry Ford partnership. 09:15:29 I'm a Detroiter so the apple partnership and Henry Ford 09:15:32 systems partnership are of special importance to me and I 09:15:36 'm honored to serve as the representative as we negotiate 09:15:40 and make that partnership great and strong. And I also, 09:15:45 too, would like to welcome our new talent Dr. Green and 09:15:50 Marlon Lynch. I really appreciate the opportunity 09:15:56 Dr. Stanley to have the student to talk with Marlon 09:15:59 and the other applicants and really have a decision making 09:16:04 voice in that process. I think we did 09:16:09 choose the right person for the job. I want to talk about 09:16:15 the folks who came to speak. The swim -- the swim team is - 09:16:20 - it's an -- it's an item of concern for all of us. I 09:16:24 really appreciated Adam's talk . All of the speakers have 09:16:27 been really intentional. The letters have been really 09:16:31 pointed and targeted and I just appreciate the hard work 09:16:34 that you all are doing in fighting for this program 09:16:38 . I'm watching the videos. Everything you said, I'm 09:16:43 paying attention so thank you for your tenassate and 09:16:48 continuing to -- tenacity and continuing to fight for what 09:16:51 you believe in. Finally the survivors, particularly 09:16:56 Chrissy, who really shared what she went through. That's 09:16:58 very difficult to do and I appreciate you coming to share 09:17:01 your experience. The administration, I appreciate 09:17:03 Michigan State we heard yesterday about the work that 09:17:09 you are doing to make sure that we're 09:17:21 making sure the Spartans are safe. I want to raise again 09:17:25 that victims of sexual violence on our campus are not 09:17:30 limited. They are vast and varied. Women, trans, men, 09:17:33 students, staff, faculty and so I just want to make sure 09:17:41 that we as an institution of higher learning are continuing 09:17:47 to make sure that those folks have a place to but that we're 09:17:53 thinking about prevention, we have a student of a major 09:17:58 institution who fought this battle and continue to fight 09:18:01 it to educate on what consent means, making sure people are 09:18:06 not harmed and we're preventing. Higher education 09:18:10 can do that. I'm hopeful to make the strides we're making 09:18:13 and be very intentional in terms of what we do in terms 09:18:17 of sexual violence so no Spartan feels unsafe on our 09:18:22 campus. » That concludes Trustee 09:18:25 comments. » PRESIDENT: That concludes 09:18:27 our meeting. A motion to adjourn, please. 09:18:31 » So moved. » PRESIDENT: That always gets 09:18:34 immediate respond. Seconds? I heard them already. The 09:18:39 motion is supported. All those in favor say aye. 09:18:39 » Trustee: Aye. 09:18:42 » PRESIDENT: Any opposed? Abstentions? The motion
