Any 10:03:43 responses from board members will come during the Trustee 10:03:50 comment portion of the meeting . We will hear from Julie 10:03:53 Farrell Ovehouse followed by Andrea Bird Mahoney. Please 10:03:57 activate the first speaker. 10:04:04 » Can you hear me? 10:04:08 » Yes, you may begin. » Thank you for allowing me 10:04:13 this opportunity to speak with you, I am a' 10:04:21 91 MSU swim and dive graduate. Two time 10:04:27 . » I received 10:04:31 the MSU female athlete of the year award and big 10 athlete 10:04:35 of the decade. One of my greatest honors was being 10:04:40 awarded the 1990 MSU sportswoman of the year. This 10:04:45 is an award given to a student athlete who combines athletic 10:04:50 and academic achievement and demonstrates admirable 10:04:52 personal character. The reason I am especially proud 10:04:56 of this award is how it reflects how I had grown 10:05:00 personally during college . Financially I never could have 10:05:04 attended a four year college without the scholarship from 10:05:08 MSU. I was a youth with a dream and the idea of possibly 10:05:11 going to college helped me stay on the right track, 10:05:15 especially during those difficult teen years. 10:05:20 Throughout my college career, I learned so many life lessons 10:05:24 , many of which I had no idea I needed to learn. Just to 10:05:28 name a few, discipline, perseverance, even and most 10:05:32 importantly during the toughest times, how to fail 10:05:37 gracely as a necessary part of growth, and the value of being 10:05:41 part of something bigger than myself. I graduated from MSU a 10:05:44 very different and better person than when I came in and 10:05:46 I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to be a 10:05:50 Spartan. When I think about MSU eliminating this program, 10:05:53 I can't help but think about the impact of this decision on 10:05:57 future student athletes they may be coming from a similar 10:06:01 background like I did. Right now, there are so many groups 10:06:05 banding together to find creative ways to protect these 10:06:09 college-level supports. A few examples include 21 different 10:06:15 national coaches association initiatives, variety of 10:06:21 different coalition and the oh limp pick and paralympic 10:06:24 coalitions create 10:06:31 ed a think tank. Please take a minute and look at all the 10:06:35 energy, drive, and passion that's pouring in to save our 10:06:38 sport. If we are given the chance, I have no doubt that 10:06:41 we can and will find a solution. My question for 10:06:48 each of you, do you want your part in the story to be one of 10:06:51 statistical loss or do you want to proudly tell your 10:06:54 story as playing a critical role in how we found the 10:06:58 solution. Each and every one of your have an opportunity to 10:07:06 choose. I ask, who will? I trustee Spartans will. Please 10:07:10 help by giving us a chance to all work together. 10:07:21 » Nakia Barr: Thank you. 10:07:24 Next we will hear from Andrea Bird Mahoney followed by 10:07:29 Michael Balow. Please activate the next speaker. 10:07:34 » Hello can you hear me? » Yes, we can hear you. 10:07:43 » my name is 10:07:50 an Andrea Bird Mahoney. I swim from 91 to 95 and served 10:07:58 as captain 1995 -- I was academic all big 10. I grew 10:08:01 up living eight minutes from the campus. My father, a 10:08:05 Professor At MSU took a job at the Department of Entomology 10:08:07 in 10:08:15 1973 and today at the age of 81, he still teaches -- since 10:08:20 1974 my family has held season tickets to football, 10:08:26 basketball and hockey. I saw magic Johnson play at the 10:08:27 field 10:08:32 house. After graduating from MSU's College of Communication 10:08:41 's arts and since sciences, I have enjoyed 10:08:44 a career in advertising. Being expert in the field of 10:08:49 brand marketing, let me tell you, image is everything. The 10:08:53 MSU brand with not afford another misstep on the global 10:08:56 stage. Call this ongoing stream of objections here what 10:09:00 you will, a monthly thorn in your side perhaps, but the 10:09:05 truth s how you decide to go about this matter will be a 10:09:10 reflection of where you decide to go with MSU's brand image. 10:09:13 Complacency is the death of a brand. Some of the best 10:09:17 companies in the world have fallen victim to it. They 10:09:21 lacked the creatively and appetite to innovate. They 10:09:25 took the easy path of comfort and in this case the 10:09:29 University's act of complacency is retiring its 10:09:32 swimming and diving program. I have a question for the 10:09:36 board of trustees today. What do you think former president 10:09:38 John 10:09:43 Hannah would think of your decision to remove Olympic 10:09:46 sports? He transform 10:09:50 ed Michigan State University from a Midwest college to a 10:09:56 major unit. President Hannah' s focused on international 10:09:59 development. That was his legacy. I ask you the board 10:10:02 of trustee, athletic 10:10:05 director 10:10:14 -- the University cannot afford to be shortsighted. 10:10:18 The decision to eliminate one of the most popular, 10:10:22 recognized sports in the University must be put into 10:10:25 immediate review. We are asking that you work with us 10:10:30 to come up with a solution to reinstate the swimming and 10:10:32 diving 10:10:38 program -- thank you for your time. 10:10:45 » Norman J. Beachamp: Thank 10:10:51 you. Next we will hear from Melanie Foster followed by Meg 10:10:53 Gore. 10:11:01 10:11:05 . » 10:11:08 Michael Balow: 10:11:14 We were told the pool -- ( indiscernible). There was no 10:11:18 money to improve the situation , the athletic department 10:11:21 rolled out facilities improvement plan for the next 10:11:25 ten to twenty years for every sport by swimming. Hundreds 10:11:29 of millions of dollars of new construction and renovations, 10:11:33 but nothing for swimming, and even more richly, this plan 10:11:37 was in the works for over a year. Yeah, we are supposed 10:11:40 to believe that it would be impossible to raise a few 10:11:44 million to fix the outdoor pool and make modest 10:11:47 improvements to the indoor pool when the University's 10:11:51 athletic department is planning to go to donors for 10:11:57 hundreds of millions dollars for among other things a new 10:12:01 football building and improvements to Breslin. This 10:12:06 report cost the department at least a couple 10:12:13 of hundred thousand dollars to produce. You can look it up - 10:12:21 - in case you still think cut ting the swim and dive team 10:12:32 was a -- in 2017, $8.5 million , in 2018, $8.2 million, and 10:12:34 2019, 10:12:40 $4.9 million all surpluses -- this year even with COVID-19 10:12:43 it should break even. The athletic 10:12:48 director beakman, I say if you want to run in the arms race 10:12:55 and division one fine, but it is not okay to sacrifice 10:13:01 nonrevenue sports to do so. I give you example of Clemson 10:13:08 University. They have made more money in football than 10:13:13 they every thought possible but they have recently cut 10:13:16 track 10:13:21 . To president Stanley I say, great harm is being done to 10:13:26 some of your best students and disdain is growing on the 10:13:35 honor of this great University existing trustees you have 10:13:39 been silent too long. New 10:13:45 trustees please review this as one of your first orders of 10:13:49 business. Don't let us done and don't let your students 10:13:55 down. Be on the right side of history, thank you. 10:14:00 10:14:05 » Next Meg Gore, followed by 10:14:08 Alyssa Gorsling. 10:14:10 » Hello my name is Meg Gore, I 10:14:13 would like to tell you how the decision to eliminate the 10:14:16 swimming and diving program has affected my son and our 10:14:25 family. My son Chris Gore is a swimmer, nationally ranked - 10:14:30 - Chris is also an ADHD kid. The structure and physical 10:14:37 demands of swimming help him find focus and integral to his 10:14:42 success. He had offers from other schools all with 10:14:45 superior facilities to Michigan State. He fell in 10:14:48 love with the program, the family feel and the academic 10:14:52 feel and the tradition of this program. I asked him how he 10:14:57 felt about the pool, and he said the bottom of the pools 10:15:03 all look the same (Reading rapidly) When the University 10:15:07 of Iowa announced the elimination of swimming and 10:15:10 diving program in mid August, we parents were concerned. It 10:15:15 was a big program with a long and esteemed history. Coach - 10:15:20 - held a meeting and was told that elimination wasn't a 10:15:28 discussion. They asked if cutting the program was 10:15:33 a consideration would Mr. 10:15:40 consideration. The timing of the announcement happened two 10:15:44 weeks before the national letter of intent signing. 10:15:48 Scholarships for next year are depleted and this makes it 10:15:53 difficult for any swimmer or diver that wants to continue 10:15:57 their athletic career. Chris loves it here and wants to 10:16:00 stay. Chris has reached out to other programs and been 10:16:04 told time and again, they would love to have him, but 10:16:08 the roster is full, or they have a spot for him but have 10:16:12 exhausted their scholarships. This puts our son facing a 10:16:19 difficult and unfair decision, one of 60 athletes, fating 10:16:22 this -- we know this is isn't personal, but the timing of 10:16:25 this announcement traps our son in a no win situation and 10:16:29 making it feel very personal and is frustrating. His 10:16:33 excitement for his first few months at Michigan State along 10:16:39 with our belief that the University stood behind its 10:16:45 Spartans will mantra, made him feel at home . We felt a door 10:16:49 open for our son and now we feel that door has slammed 10:16:54 shut. I appreciate the board allowing me to speak, I 10:16:59 implore you to understand the long reaching impact of this 10:17:03 decision, and to embrace Spartans will, go green, and 10:17:10 thank you. » Next we will hear from 10:17:20 Alyssa Gorsling followed by Erica Thibodeau. Please 10:17:23 activate the next speak er. We can hear you, you may begin 10:17:26 . » My name is Alyssa Gorsling 10:17:29 and I am approaching you today because I am concerned about 10:17:35 the lack of transparency of the healing fund. I have 10:17:39 gotten involved in student activism and reached out to 10:17:42 many survivors and their families. There seems to be a 10:17:46 general consensus among the vast majority of these groups. 10:17:50 Survivors are struggling with their claims and unable to 10:17:55 receive paperwork for compensation. Survivors are 10:18:00 struggling to access their just compensation after this 10:18:04 University failed them. The lack of leadership and 10:18:10 dereliction of duty by 10:18:18 10:18:22 by 10:18:30 Brianna Scott. She has shown 10:18:36 she is inadequate to run the program and help survivors 10:18:41 heal and holding MSU accountable for the Nassar 10:18:45 abuse and holding back independent investigation to 10:18:52 find the truth she has shown she is inadequate and fulfill 10:19:00 what her her constituents have asked her to do. Nobody 10:19:10 deserves a nightmare of abuse that Brianna Scott has put 10:19:15 them through. Trustee 10:19:18 Scott, 10:19:25 ask you to resign, you are unfit to lead. Thank you. 10:19:32 » Next we will hear from Elena Emory followed by Jon Edwards. 10:19:34 Please activate the next speaker. 10:19:36 » Hello 10:19:39 . » We can hear you, you may 10:19:42 begin. » My name is Elena Emory and I 10:19:45 am here today to share frustration with the gross 10:19:55 misconduct taken in by members of this board by 10:20:01 the -- Nassar abuse. Trustee Scott has chosen to leverage 10:20:05 her position on this board and enrich herself at the ebbs 10:20:07 pence of survivor 10:20:13 s of domestic assault. I cannot fathom how an 10:20:19 individual can run her campaign on reform and turn 10:20:25 her back on students and betray them. I am equally 10:20:31 disappointed in chairwoman 10:20:38 Dianne Byrum 's leadership. She took it upon herself to 10:20:42 appoint trustee Scott to manage the distribution funds 10:20:46 to survivors through the healing fund. There is moral 10:20:50 misdeeds by the members of this board and I am asking you 10:20:53 as a collective board to hold one another accountable. I 10:21:03 have witnessed members of this board to stand idly by. We 10:21:10 put our faith in this board around it has let us down -- 10:21:16 chairwoman Byrum turned a blind eye to this, it is 10:21:23 disdainful and to this board I say to you, do not stand idly 10:21:29 by and hold each other accountable, chairperson Byrum 10:21:35 has failed. To trustee Scott, you have proven to be an unfit 10:21:43 leader, resign. Thank you. » Next we will hear from Jon 10:21:46 Edwards. Please activate the next speaker. 10:21:50 » Can you hear me? » Yes, you may begin. 10:21:54 » Jon Edwards: Thank you for this opportunity to speak my 10:22:03 wife Cheryl is here with me. 10:22:13 (indiscernible) mark has imposed harsh new requirements 10:22:17 , I walked away without my degree after seven years, four 10:22:21 languages, two years in the field, four years on federal 10:22:26 grants and yet I received no calls from the history 10:22:29 department to inquire why I had not submitted the final 10:22:35 dissertation. I have wasn't ABD, I was all but cap and 10:22:41 gown, as part of the me too movement, we received e-mail 10:22:47 blasts from two MSU presidents that Nassar was a one off, we 10:22:53 wrote to assure that he wasn't a one off. There 10:22:56 was a culture of abuse in the 10:23:00 70's and 80s 10:23:06 the findings of the report that revealed we were not 10:23:08 alone 10:23:15 . -- got my PhD retroactive to 10:23:20 1998 -- three years into this there is no progress towards 10:23:27 meaningful reconciliation, I have been deprived of an 10:23:30 academic career, but there is no way to make progress 10:23:35 without that reconciliation. Cheryl has been forced to give 10:23:40 up her dream of a career in Africa. We were victimized 10:23:43 and marginalized 10:23:50 and not given relief. For two years OIE they 10:24:01 marginalized. The chairman b rated me in a formal phone 10:24:06 call. When finally confronted with the forms signed refuse 10:24:11 toed sign off on my disservation. Another faculty 10:24:14 member after more than a year apologized to us, comparing 10:24:19 what happened to us to the 10:24:30 Atlantic slave trade, ing the nothing compared to the slave 10:24:35 trade, but no one asked how can we help you and make your 10:24:42 life better. Marcus prevented me from completing my PhD, it 10:24:48 was academic fraud. My PhD which I have 10:24:54 is worthless without -- ( indiscernible). We ask for 10:24:56 your hope. » Norman J. Beachamp clan 10:25:03 : Thank you that concludes public 10:25:05 participation. 10:25:07 » PRESIDENT STANLEY: I want 10:25:10 to thank all of those who spoke in the public 10:25:13 participation section for their input. I will limit my 10:25:17 remarks to congratulating and giving 10:25:21 warm welcome to 10:25:27 Patrick O'Keefe and Rema Vassar. 10:25:30 We will now open the floor for nominations for the office of 10:25:31 Board Chair. When I call your name 10:26:21 please indicate your support by saying yea or nay or yes or 10:26:24 no. » CHAIR BYRUM: Do we need a 10:26:30 second on that motion. » A second is not required on 10:26:32 motions. 10:26:34 » CHAIR BYRUM: Yes. 10:26:37 » 10:26:44 [Roll call vote] 10:26:57 » Norman J. That concludes the election of officers. 10:28:40 Now we will move to trustee comments. 10:28:45 » Chair Byrum. » CHAIR BYRUM: I want to 10:28:51 start by welcoming our new colleagues to the board Dr. 10:28:54 Rema Vassar and Patrick O' Keefe. I am looking forward to 10:28:58 getting to know you a little bit better. Looking forward 10:29:03 to meeting you in person. Since our February 2020 board 10:29:09 meeting we have not been able to meet in person. To all of 10:29:11 my board colleagues, thank you very much for the trustee you 10:29:15 have placed in me to serve as your Board Chair for the next 10:29:19 two years. It is something that I take very seriously, I 10:29:23 take it to heart and I am excited to the collective work 10:29:26 that we are all going to do together over the next two 10:29:29 years to benefit the future of the University. Thank you 10:29:34 this concludes my comments. » Norman J. Beachamp 10:29:42 thank you, next we will hear from our 10:29:46 newly 10:29:51 new 10:29:54 Dan Kelly 10:29:58 . » -- I want to congratulate 10:30:01 trustee Byrum on her selection as chair. This board went 10:30:05 through a very deliberate process , we had a very good 10:30:09 meeting amongst all of the board members over the past 10:30:12 couple of weeks. We talked about expectations of the 10:30:17 chair, and Diane came out of that process for what I 10:30:22 believe as the best candidate for Chair and I am confident 10:30:25 she will meet the expectations of what the board has laid out 10:30:29 for her. I want to thank the board for confidence in me as 10:30:34 Vice Chair, and I will work as hard as I can to meet with 10:30:38 those expectations as well. Finally, I want to let the 10:30:42 public know that I personally am very excited about this new 10:30:47 board. It is a very talented board and I think we really 10:30:50 cover the spectrum of what we need to for MSU, so I am 10:30:54 excited about the future, it is going to be maybe a 10:30:58 difficult year for a lot of reasons, but I am very 10:31:01 confident that this is the right board for the right time 10:31:04 here at MSU, so thank you 10:31:08 very much. » Thank you, next we will hear 10:31:14 from trustee foster. » Thank you, I also would like 10:31:16 to welcome 10:31:22 our new board remembers Rema Vassar and Patrick O'Keefe. 10:31:25 You have a vast skill of accomplishments to bring to 10:31:30 the board. I sense a new spirit of collaboration 10:31:36 amongst the board of trustees. I think we are going to be 10:31:38 able to work well together. We have a lot of issues and 10:31:43 challenges ahead of us. As we work diligently to get this 10:31:46 campus reopened again, I am excited to work with my new 10:31:52 and existing colleagues and I would like both Dan and Dianne 10:31:55 for the 10:31:59 time you put in the last two years as chair and Vice Chair, 10:32:03 it takes a lot of time and energy to serve in those roles 10:32:07 and I am personally very pleased that you are willing 10:32:13 to accept that responsibility again. 10:32:16 . » Thank you. 10:32:18 » 10:32:25 Trustee Renee Knacke. » Thank you. I want to say a 10:32:30 special welcome to trustee Vassar and O'Keeffe, and I 10:32:34 look forward to working with you in the coming months and 10:32:39 years, and to the Edwards in response to your comments this 10:32:43 morning, I acknowledge it and apologize for what happened to 10:32:47 you, I appreciate you telling your story, which I know is 10:32:51 hard to do. I take it very seriously. I take continued 10:32:53 conversations with all survivors that I have had 10:32:57 including you very seriously. This informs the questions 10:33:04 that I ask and importantly, the reforms that I continue to 10:33:07 advocate for here at Michigan State. I look forward in the 10:33:13 coming year to working towards increased transparency and 10:33:18 accountability in sexual misconduct and all areas of 10:33:22 governance and want to acknowledge that Provost 10:33:26 Woodruff has been wonderful in coming in this year to support 10:33:29 these efforts and the concerns that I have raised and I 10:33:31 believe this board going forward will be working 10:33:33 together towards these ends as well. Thank you. 10:33:37 » Thank you. Trustee O'Keeffe 10:33:39 . 10:33:42 » Thank you. I want to thank 10:33:46 the swimming contingency that discussed the importance of 10:33:51 the swimming program to them. I think your comments are 10:33:53 insightful 10:33:59 and passionate and not unlike the swimming programs that I 10:34:03 have met, you are very articulate and scholars in 10:34:07 your own right. It is a pleasure to be associated with 10:34:13 such a good group. I want to thank the participants who 10:34:17 talked about the healing fund. Something that I am interested 10:34:20 in learning more about and thank you for your courage 10:34:24 regarding the statements about its effectiveness. I also 10:34:30 want to acknowledge Mr. Edwards. You know, words mean 10:34:34 something but I am a show me person, and I can appreciate 10:34:38 your concerned relative to actions of the University, 10:34:41 relative to words that have been presented and I know that 10:34:45 's a difficult decision and thank you for your comments 10:34:50 today. I want to address the public being a newbie to this 10:34:52 board. First 10:34:55 as a 10:35:00 crisis manager by profession I was interested in the 10:35:06 leadership of this board by miss Byrum and Mr. Kelly and I 10:35:09 am quite satisfied that we are going to have a new 10:35:12 direction and a new effort relative to addressing some of 10:35:16 the shortfalls that may have been perceived in the past and 10:35:19 I am excited about their leadership going forward and I 10:35:23 think we will have a good collaborative year in 10:35:26 accomplishing things to move the University forward. My 10:35:30 background for some of you that don't know, I am 10:35:33 accounting grad at Michigan State, I have a master's in 10:35:37 finance, I am interested in the finances of the University 10:35:40 . My firm is involved in strategic planning and 10:35:44 financial advisory, two things of interest to me as it 10:35:48 relates to Michigan State, and I also testify across the 10:35:53 country in shareholder disputes regarding governance, 10:35:59 so I am pretty keen on those issues around the University 10:36:01 and 10:36:07 those three issues will be my focal point. The cleary act - 10:36:11 - I think we have a long way to go, and I am hopefully 10:36:15 that we can move in a new direction, so thank you 10:36:18 and happy to be on the board. » Trustee Scott. 10:36:22 » Thank you, I at well would like to welcome our newest 10:36:28 trustees, trustee O'Keeffe and trustee Vassar, it have been a 10:36:32 pleasure getting to know both of you over the past few days 10:36:37 and weeks, and I really am just ecstatic about the 10:36:41 expertise that each of you are bringing to this board, the 10:36:43 experiences that you are bringing and the passion that 10:36:47 you have to correct some of the issues that are present at 10:36:49 MSU 10:36:53 , so has already been articulated I know you are 10:36:57 going to do a phenomenal job and I congratulate you both. 10:37:02 I would like to congratulate trustee Kelly and Byrum for 10:37:06 both being re-elect ed to their positions.
