Rema Vassar, Ph.D. serves as a Professor in the department of Administrative and Organizational Studies at Wayne State University's College of Education. She holds a doctorate from UCLA in Urban Schooling, and her work has appeared in numerous peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Prior, she spent more than 20 years as a teacher, counselor, and administrator in K-12 schools.
Dr. Vassar is leading the charge for a more inclusive, equitable, and empowering educational landscape through her work. She is the creator of Centering Black Children in Education (CBCE), a pioneering movement that amplifies the voices and needs of Black students, ensuring they are seen, heard, and valued. She champions initiatives that place culture and equity at the forefront of education. Dr. Vassar also founded Leading Well, a holistic program designed to support and uplift Black women educational leaders, equipping them with the resources and community necessary to excel.
Dr. Rema co-chaired the 2024 American Educational Research Association’s annual meeting, has been appointed to the governor’s MiSTEM Advisory Council, and has earned Crain’s Detroit Business Notable Leaders in Higher Education award, as well as the National Action Network MLK Dream Keepers Award. She is an advocate for the next generation of leaders and committed to creating a future where every student has the opportunity to succeed.
