Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees is composed of eight members who are elected in statewide elections to serve staggered eight-year terms. The trustees are responsible for setting policy, approving budgets and overseeing the university’s administration. They also play a central role in shaping MSU’s strategic direction, including academic priorities, campus facilities and student success initiatives. Working alongside the university president, the board helps ensure that Michigan State fulfills its mission as a leading public research institution.

Established as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan by Act 130 of 1855, the Board of Instruction (professors and teachers) of the college acted as the first governing board of the institution.
